So I just saw the Gyo OVA (spoilers maybe??)
And it was better than I thought it would be! It’s at least better than all the other adaptations of Ito’s work. Switching Tadashi and Kaori’s roles was actually kind of interesting!
I only wish they had stuck closer to Ito’s writing style! There’s a lot of points at the beginning where it’s almost infuriatingly standard horror movie fare (three attractive women on vacation - one’s the straight man, one’s extravagantly promiscuous, and one gets picked on and has mental issues). It gets better later in the movie, when they’re taking almost exclusively from the source material. I also really wish new!Kaori had….actual…personality?? She just reads as very one-dimensional and flawless to me. Maybe it’s just me being a gigantic sap, though, but I did end up feeling for her and…uh, other guy. Her nice male friend. I can’t remember his name!
The art is so sterile compared to Ito’s work! Which is a given, considering they had to figure out how to animate and still keep some semblance of Ito’s style. They did pretty well with what they had to work with, though. You can’t really animate the way he draws.
The fanservice in the first half is…upsetting, to say the least. It’s such a drastically un-Ito thing that it’s incredibly jarring and more than a little off-putting!
Not gonna lie, though. This was an absolutely brilliant way to animate the fire trick in the circus. My heart skipped a beat! ♥
